Build your skills. Graduate into open play. Find your table.
Ready to learn mahjong and join the fun? This three-session beginner series is designed to help you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to play.
Taught by the Maj Mob Bosses and co-hosted by TC Jewfolk's FolkLab, this welcoming, hands-on class will break down American Mah Jongg into simple steps, giving you time to learn the basics, practice your skills, and get comfortable at the table. No prior experience needed — just bring your curiosity and a willingness to play!
Over three evenings, you’ll learn the game, meet new people, and build the confidence to join open table play. After you graduate, you’ll be ready to participate in Maj Mob open plays and enjoy games with new friends throughout the Twin Cities.
Each session includes instruction, practice, and plenty of time for connection.
The first two sessions include delicious mezze catered by Razava in St Paul and the last session will be a beautiful night of open play --that you'll be ready for!-- with catered snacks inside a Sukkah in Mendota Heights.

Meet the Mob Bosses
Maj Mob was created by two friends who love the game, love teaching it, and love bringing people together around the table. Whether you are brand new or just need things explained in a simpler way, we are here to make learning Mah Jongg feel fun, social, and doable.
About Janie
I may be newer to Mah Jongg, but that is exactly why I understand how overwhelming it can feel when you are first learning. I have been playing for about a year, and it took me three different attempts at lessons before I finally stuck with it. Once I did, I was hooked.
With a degree in Education and more than 15 years of experience teaching, I know how to break things down into simple, easy-to-follow steps. My goal is to make learning Mah Jongg feel less intimidating, more understandable, and a lot more fun.
About Caren
I’ve been playing Mah Jongg for over 50 years, inspired by my mother, who played for nearly 70 years and brought a deep passion for the game to our family. While she was a very serious player, I simply fell in love with the joy of playing.
Now, I enjoy sharing that love with others—helping new players learn the game in a fun, welcoming, and relaxed environment.
